An extensive collection in the fields of mental health and psychiatry


The Charles Cahn Library houses over 15,000 books and journals in the fields of psychiatry and mental health services. It has received in donation, over the years, the personal book collections of four psychiatrists associated with the Douglas Institute: Gaston Harnois, Henry Murphy, Vasavan Nair and Ramzy Yassa.

Named after the distinguished Douglas psychiatrist,Charles Cahn, MD, the library maintains journal subscriptions to over 1200 online medical periodicals, both scientific and medical. It is also a member of the McGill Affiliated Hospital Libraries Consortium.

Services for the public and professionals

Public access is available only by appointment and is restricted to on site consultation of documents in the library.

Interlibrary loans (ILL)




Members of the general public are asked to submit requests for articles and interlibrary loans through their public library or the library of their institution.

The library has reciprocal arrangements with many library partners, such as:

  • MMAHLA (McGill Medical and Health Libraries Association)
  • ABSAUM (Association des Bibliothèques de la santé affiliées à l'Université de Montréal) and several other psychiatric libraries in Canada.

The library accepts requests via DOCLINE, e-mail, fax, mail, or phone.

Access for employees and professionals

All Douglas Institute staff, McGill residents on rotation at the Douglas, and research personnel affiliated with the Douglas Institute, have full access to library services, including professional access loans and interlibrary loans. Other students and staff guests of the Institute are asked to contact the library for registration.

All users must fill out a library registration card and present appropriate institute identification.

Onsite computers are available to all registered library users. The library also has four computer ports available for users with their own laptop computers. To reserve a computer terminal, please contact the library.

Loans
Books and periodicals (except for the last published issue): three-week loan period; maximum number of items: 10
Reference material and the latest periodical issues: on site consultation only.
Loans may be renewed twice, either in person or by phone or email, unless someone requested the same document.

Photocopier
A code-operated photocopier is available in the library. Library users are responsible for making their own photocopies and for acquiring a code from their department head or administrator.

Reference services
Reference and litterature search services are restricted to Douglas Institute staff, McGill residents on rotation at the Douglas, and research personnel affiliated with the Douglas Institute. Submit your questions or requests for literature reviews to the library department head.

Table of contents: Journals
The library offers a table of contents alerting service for journal titles in the library's collection and also provides the option of ordering articles.

Online resources
The Douglas Institute staff may access online resources from library computer terminals or Douglas Institute network computers:

  • A list of printed periodicals at the Charles Cahn Library
  • Book catalogue at the Charles Cahn Library (by subject); call the library for an up-to-date search
  • The library’s collection of books and journals is included in AMICUS, the online catalogue of Library and Archives Canada.
  • Four main database collections:
    • OVID Online (Medline, Embase, PsychInfo, Social Work Abstracts, Global Health, etc.)
    • CINAHL (Nursing and allied health, including over 1200 online journals)
    • UPTODATE (Full-text medical/psychiatric database)
    • COCHRANE (Full-text systematic reviews in health care)
