Integrating Mental Health into Primary Health Care in the Caribbean: A Demonstration Project in Belize and Dominica

Phase 1 of the project involved building alliances, identifying partners and participants, and surveying the skills, knowledge, attitudes and needs of participants. The results served to construct a relevant knowledge exchange program for Phase 2, a face-to-face knowledge exchange series. This Phase integrated primary and secondary care perspectives on integrating mental health into primary care, and emphasized administrative and clinical practice adaptations. Content also included human rights and stigma issues as regards to MH interventions. Phase 3 involved setting up country-based peer-to-peer meetings aimed at consolidating the integration of MH interventions, as well as a wrap-up meeting to obtain feedback and information on outcomes, and on working with health ministries to plan for the maintenance of gains. Final outcomes were very positive.
