The Personality Disorders Clinic is a superspecialized consultation, assessment and treatment service for people between the ages of 18 and 65 years who have a personality disorder.

Services provided

The goal of the clinic is to help patients develop better emotional regulation skills and improve relational functioning through the following services:

  • Psychiatric and psychological assessment
  • Pharmacotherapy
  • Support therapy
  • Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT)
  • Group therapy
  • Crisis intervention

The clinic is made up of two programs:

  1. Short term. Group cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) on a weekly basis for 16 weeks along with a walk-in clinic. The groups are held in French and English and generally begin in September and February.
When patients are stabilized, they return to their physicians or treatment team. If their condition requires more intensive follow-up, and if they are eligible for the service, they may be referred to the long-term program.

  2. Long term. Group therapy (psychodynamic orientation with cognitive-behavioural elements) on a weekly basis for one year and every other week for two years, with a limited number of individual sessions and a walk-in clinic. Duration of three years with an optional transition year.

Access to services

To be admitted to the clinic's short-term program, patients need to have a doctor's referral and a main diagnosis of personality disorder with impulsivity. The referral must be sent to the Evaluation Liaison Module (MEL) at the Douglas Institute.
