After completing a post-doctoral research fellowship training at the Biological Psychiatry Branch of the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, MD, USA) with Robert M. Post, MD, Serge Beaulieu, MD, PhD, FRCPC, joined the Douglas Institute in 1997 and assumed the post of director of the Mood Disorders Programs.
A psychiatrist and researcher-clinician, Serge Beaulieu is interested primarily in bipolar disorders (manic depressive illness) and major depression. He studies neurobiological responses to antidepressant and mood stabilizer treatment and potential new treatments for these disorders.
Serge Beaulieu has received diverse peer-reviewed research funding from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Affective Disorders (NARSAD), the Stanley Foundation, the Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec (FRSQ), the Canadian Fund for Innovation (CFI) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
He is a member of the board of governors of the Canadian Network on Mood and Anxiety Treatment (CANMAT), a member of the Board of Councilors of the International Society of Bipolar Disorders (ISBD) and one of the investigators and founding members of the Canadian Bipolar Consortium.
