Stéphane Bastianetto, PhD, is a researcher in neuroscience who is interested in the mechanisms responsible for brain aging and Alzheimer’s disease.
His research focuses on the neuroprotective effects of natural products, particularly the polyphenols derived from green tea and red wine.
The key objectives of Dr. Bastianetto’s work are as follows:
- To measure the effectiveness of polyphenols, which are antioxidants found in certain fruits and vegetables, green tea and red wine, that protect, in particular, the hippocampus, one of the first regions in the brain to suffer damage from Alzheimer’s disease.
- To use these substances to develop a drug that would slow the progress of Alzheimer’s disease.
Dr. Bastianetto also founded Neuromedia, a Web-based mental health resource intended for patients, their families and health professionals. The bilingual site provides current and objective information on brain aging and neurological diseases. It also offers advice in response to legal and administrative problems faced by people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
