Profile
As professional chief of Social Services, Joan Simand’s background as a clinician, manager, and community development agent is diverse. Teaching activities at the McGill University School of Social Work include the areas of transcultural health, mental health, and ethics and legal issues.

A recent doctoral fellowship from McGill University led Joan over a four-month period to develop community field placements with an interdisciplinary master’s program in Indonesia, where collaboration continues.

Engaged in doctoral studies at the Université de Montréal and McGill University, Joan’s research interests include the development of professional identity and competency within program management structures. Equally, respect for local knowledge, and ways for organizing social work principles and practices on an international basis, are subjects of inquiry.

As vice-president of the Douglas Institute Ethics Committee, Joan’s activities include the development of social work professional practice modules and training for staff, supervisors and social work interns.
