Guest musician Luc de Larochellière sings in tribute to Douglas achievements

Montréal, June 9, 2006 – An open house, mental health educational activities, giant inflatable games for children -these are only a few of the surprises awaiting visitors at the Douglas 125th Anniversary Grand Celebration, which will take place on the magnificent hospital grounds Saturday June 17, from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. This day, commemorating 125 years of Douglas contributions to the advancement of psychiatry, will conclude with an outdoor show by Luc de Larochellière and the duo Marabu.

“Our 125th is the perfect time to invite the general public to see a modern mental health institution, to destroy myths and raise awareness for problems that affect 25 percent of the population—our families, our friends, and ourselves" explains Jacques Hendlisz, director general of the Douglas. "The 125th Anniversary Grand Celebration is an opportunity for visitors and our mental health experts to interact. We’ve organized a number of fun and educational activities –from brain functioning to horticultural therapy."

Activities for all ages
Starting at 1:00 p.m., visitors wishing to discover the Douglas can:
• Take a guided historical bus tour;
• See real brains at our Brain Bank;
• Test their stress level and memory;
• Discover which well-known personalities have suffered / suffer from bipolar disorder;
• Get to know the animals who provide therapeutic aide to people suffering from mental illness;
• Discover who the “ice storm children” are;
• Learn about brain-friendly foods;
• Garden in our greenhouses and discover horticultural therapy;
• Visit a virtual navigation workshop and our eating disorders clinic;
• Visit the Douglas chapels, our impressive power house and recreation centre;
• Also, kids will have a blast painting and playing in the giant inflatable games;

Luc de Larochellière wraps up the evening
The Douglas is proud to end the 125th Anniversary Grand Celebration with two outdoor shows. Starting at 5:30 p.m., the duo Marabu will heat up the stage, followed by singer-composer Luc de Larochellière.
