The Montreal Collaborating Centre hosts the WHO International Conference, which marks the launch of the joint WHO/WONCA report "Integrating Mental Health into Primary Care: A Global Perspective".
2007 The WHO publishes the "Atlas: Global Resources for People with Intellectual Disabilities" produced by the Montreal Collaborating Centre and the affiliated Centre de Réadaptation Lisette-Dupras and West Montreal Readaptation Centre. The atlas is launched during the 2nd International Conference on Intellectual Disabilities/Mental Retardation in Bangkok. The authors of this work receive the Prix rayonnement international 2009.

On January 16, Gaston Harnois, MD, is named Personality of the Week by La Presse in recognition of his involvement in the PAHO/WHO Conference on Intellectual Disability and the adoption of the Montreal Declaration on Intellectual Disability.

Publication of a WHO guidance package on mental health policies and programmes in the workplace.
2004 On October 6, the Montreal Declaration on Intellectual Disability is adopted by the 65 participants from 17 countries who took part in the PAHO/WHO Conference on Intellectual Disability.

2002 Gaston P. Harnois, MD, chairs the WHO Global Council for Mental Health's "Labour and Business Leaders for Mental Health" working group.
2000 The Montreal Collaborating Centre works with the United Nations NGO Committee on Mental Health and Human Rights to draft the UN's Mental Health Position Statement, which is presented to the Millennium Forum in May and published on September 19, 2001.

1996 Representing the Montreal Collaborating Centre, Gaston Harnois, MD, is invited to address a joint meeting of the United Nation's NGO Committees on Mental Health and Human Rights at the U.N. Headquarters in New York.

Gaston Harnois, MD, is named a member of the Technical Advisory Committee for the WHO initiative entitled "Nations for Mental Health." Its goal is to raise mental health awareness, create innovative approaches, lead innovation and promote service development to underserved populations in the world.
1990 Gaston Harnois, MD, signs the Caracas Declaration on the restructuring of psychiatric care on the basis of primary health care in the context of community-based services.
1984 The Montreal Collaborating Centre is visited by more than 50 partners from around the world: Indonesia, India, Venezuela, Finland, Belgium, Nicaragua and France.
1983 The Montreal Collaborating Centre hosts a three-week course on the organization and management of a psychiatric hospital and welcomes 26 representatives from 23 countries. Teaching staff include members of the UN, WHO, PAHO/Washington, Harvard University, the US National Institute of Mental Health, McGill University and Université de Montréal. For the occasion, the Collaborating Centre publishes a document entitled "Principles of Psychiatric Hospital Management."
1982 After consultation with the Canadian government, the Director-General of WHO designates the Douglas Mental Health University Institute as the first Collaborating Centre for research and training in mental health in Canada.
