Douglas Hospital launches new public lecture series

Confused about the terms OCD, ADHD, and PTSD? Want to know if your elderly parent is acting normally or may be suffering from Alzheimer’s? Interested in new treatments for depression and other mental illnesses? If you answered, “yes” to any of these questions, you are the perfect candidate for the Douglas’ Mini-Psych School. Enrol today, and become a graduate of this informative and fun program. All you need is curiosity and some free Wednesday evenings this fall, starting October 18, 2006.

“Although graduates of the Mini-Psych School won’t be able to prescribe medications, they will have an excellent understanding of mental illnesses and better able to make informed decisions,” says Douglas Chief of Psychiatry, Mimi Israël MD, who is overseeing the program. “Approximately one quarter of the population is affected by these disorders. Increased understanding and awareness are key to facilitating help-seeking and integration into society for affected individuals."

Mini-Psych School will run for six-consecutive Wednesday evenings and each lecture will build on the previous one. The lectures will be taught by some of the Douglas’ leading researchers and clinicians who are also animated speakers. The lecture topics will cover material that is taught in psychology or psychiatry classes. For example, the fourth course, Am I behaving normally? Common Adult Psychiatry, will discuss the difference between normal anxiety and anxiety disorders or feeling sad and depression. Other topics include child, adolescent and geriatric psychiatry and how your brain works.

“The Mini-Psych School is an excellent way to share expertise and knowledge. These sessions will not only be informative, but also a fun experience for the teachers and students,” says Dr. Israël. “Through brining together experts in the fields of Psychology and Psychiatry with members from the community, the Mini-Psych school will provide easily accessible information about the brain, how it works and what happens when it doesn’t.”

Space is limited for Mini-Psych School and registration is required. Enrolment information is available on line at www.douglas.qc.ca. For more information, individuals can also email mini_dot_psych_At_douglas_dot_mcgill_dot_ca or phone (514) 761-6131, extension 2717.
