General Questions

How much land is required?

Approximately 25 acres are needed for the new facility which represents about 25 American football fields or 15 % of our grounds.

How much will a new facility cost?

The cost to construct the project is estimated at $250 million. Architect fees, equipment and furnishing bring the overall total to about $330 million.

How many beds?

The prefeasibility study calls for 189 beds – slightly fewer than our current 241 beds. Most of this reduction is due to transfers under the Plan d'action en santé mentale.

How will the project be financed?

Financing will be determined by the province at a later date, following the authorization of the project by the Treasury Board (Conseil du trésor).

How long will it take before the 'new Douglas' is built?

From what we understand, it will take a minimum of 5 to 6 years but could be longer depending on the timing of approvals.
