The Collège des médecins du Québec awarded its 2006 Grand Prix to an exceptional psychiatrist, Mimi Israël, MD, paying tribute to her scientific effectiveness, acute sense of ethics and organization, and modern and dynamic vision, inspired by psychiatry. With unstoppable energy, Mimi Israël, MD, is well known among patients and colleagues alike for her superb listening and diplomatic skills, and is the first psychiatrist to receive the highest honour awarded by the Collège des médecins du Québec.

Mimi Israël, MD, is currently psychiatrist-in-chief at the Douglas Hospital in Verdun, as well as co-director of the Hospital’s Clinical Activities Directorate and Teaching and Training Bureau. She also practices psychiatry at the Hospital’s specialized Eating Disorders Clinic.

Her openness, adherence to interdisciplinarity, and formidable capacity to analyze and synthesize, have made her a leader at the Douglas Hospital. She has tirelessly reorganized clinical services, improved the lives of patients, and involved herself in projects designed to integrate research and teaching in clinical practice. As president of the Association of Chiefs of the Departments of Psychiatry of Montreal, she plays a key role in developing the future of mental health services through participation in the McGill network and the McGill Réseau universitaire integer de santé (known as McGill RUIS), and by helping to implement the new provincial Mental Health Action Plan.

After more than 20 years of practicing psychiatry, Mimi Israël, MD, is determined to raise psychiatry beyond its current limitations. Adhering to the belief that, in professional life “our talents must impact the greatest number possible”, she is devoting herself to promoting mental health in our society, developing an organization that improves service accessibility and care quality, and reaffirming the psychiatrist’s role within the clinical care interdisciplinary team.
