FAQs

If I am receiving treatment in another center, can I access the Eating Disorders Program?

Yes. In these cases, the Eating Disorders Program will provide support to the team treating you. As soon as a place in the Program becomes available, we will transfer you to our establishment.

I am on your waiting list and in the last few weeks I have been losing weight rapidly and am alarmed. Can I go to the Douglas Hospital emergency department?

The Douglas Hospital does not have an emergency department for eating disorders. If your condition is serious, it is essential that you go to an emergency department close to your home.
You can then contact us in order to update your status and reassess the waiting time.
To learn more about how to access services at the Douglas, go to the Eating Disorders Program page.

I heard my daughter vomiting immediately after a meal. How should I react?

The best attitude is to talk openly with your daughter. Tell her that you would like to help her and that you are available if she wants to talk to you. Be honest and frank, but do not attempt to assign blame. Also, be understanding and respectful of her rate of progress towards recovery.

Additionally you can contact the ANEB, an association for people suffering from eating disorders and for those closest to them. It provides support, therapy groups and a 24-hour phone line.

Whom do I ask for a reference?

Ask your family doctor or any health professional. They will carry out the medical examinations needed prior to your treatment in the Eating Disorders Program: blood tests, an electrocardiogram (ECG) and a physical examination. Your doctor may also ask for other tests, depending on the state of your health.

If you do not have a family doctor, go to the CLSC closest to your home.

What does the preliminary evaluation consist of?

The preliminary evaluation consists of a questionnaire specifically designed for eating disorders that enables us to obtain precise data on your current status. A member of Eating Disorders Program team will contact you by phone after we receive your application (it could take a few days).

At the end of this evaluation, he or she will inform you how long you have to wait to be admitted into the Program and tell you how to look after yourself to ensure that your health condition does not worsen.

Once my application is accepted, when could I begin the Eating Disorders Program?

Since ours is the only specialized program for eating disorders in the Quebec health care system, waiting times can vary between a few weeks and several months.

However, the preliminary evaluation will enable us to establish the severity of your condition and refer you to other resources in the meantime.

What do I have to do to receive treatment from the Eating Disorders Program?

Consult the Eating Disorders Program's "Access to services" page

I live in a region from which it is impossible for me to go to Montreal to benefit from the Eating Disorders Program. I am receiving treatment from a team that is not specialized in this field, what can I do?

With the consent of the professionals treating you, the Eating Disorder Program can act as a resource and collaborate with them to ensure that you receive optimal treatment.

Does the Eating Disorders Program provide accommodation for people from outside Montreal?

The Eating Disorders Program has no housing facilities. However, we will be able to advise you and help you find a place to stay.

Consult housing resources or contact us.
