The animal facility provides technical services to support the research needs of individuals using live animal models, and includes:

  • Parenteral and oral substance administration.
  • Blood tests, injections and gavage
  • Stereotaxic surgery and other types of surgery
  • Placement of catheters
  • Endotracheal intubation and general anaesthesia
  • Breeding colony management
  • Euthanasia
  • Other procedures as requested

Colony management services

The animal facility offers a service to help Douglas investigators with managing their mouse colonies.
The service comprises the following components which will be provided as required.

Breeding set up/monitoring


  • Set up new breeding cages
  • Changing cages (providing fresh cages as deemed appropriate)
  • Checking pregnancy status
  • Separating females from males
  • Set up/Updating breeding cage cards
  • Maintaining a colony data base* (one per lab; Excel sheets listing animal ID, date of birth, genotype if applicable, mating date, number of pups, death, etc.)
  • Communication with a single dedicated member of the participating lab to inform about and discuss :
    • breeding
    • strategies
    • status
    • issues

*a database template will be provided by the animal facility.

Weaning, sexage and Identification

  • Taking biopsies (tail, ear or toe)
  • ID tagging during the weaning,
  • Setting up/updating cages cards
  • Updating colony database regarding ID and DOB

User fees for mouse colony management services in the Neurophenotyping Centre Animal facility: 25 $/ h

This fee applies to the service components as outlined above including database management and communication with the dedicated lab representative. Any change in user fees will be announced 1 month in advance.

The Animal Facility provides all necessary veterinarian material for animal research.

To request veterinarian material please complete the supply requisition form and return it to the following address:

  • All other veterinarian supply available upon request.
  • Veterinarian material price available upon request only.
  • Please allow 24 hours after the receipt of the request to receive the supply.
