Mental Health Residential Resources

The Mental Health Residential Resources service is intended for adults, including elderly individuals, with mental illness, who are unable to live autonomously, even with community services, and who require social protection and general supervision. The residential resources team develops and supervises residential resources in order to assist adults suffering from mental health problems. Reintegration into the community is the major part of our mandate - and is achieved by recognizing and promoting the autonomy of each individual. Each person served is given an individualized intervention plan - tailored to his or her unique needs. Teaching and research are integrated into this service.

A variety of residential resources are available: family-type residences (adult foster homes), intermediate resources such as group homes, former pavilions, supervised apartments, and boarding houses. The majority of resources are located in the centre-west, south-west, and west parts of the island of Montreal.

Please note: referrals may be made by healthcare professionals from within the McGill University Teaching Hospital Network (which includes the Douglas Hospital, as well as the Allan Memorial Institute, the Montreal General Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, and the Jewish General Hospital), and the Lakeshore General Hospital.

Residential Services Team

The mandate of the Residential Services Team is to provide follow-up for Douglas Institute patients living in residential resources. Team members work in collaboration with residents, their loved ones, other professionals, and community organizations, ensuring that each resident achieves the highest level possible of autonomy, social reintegration, and normalization. They create individualized intervention plans for each patient. Each plan is tailored to the individual's needs. The team is also involved in research and teaching.

Residential resources are arranged by the Mental Health Residential Resources team (see above). All placement decisions are based on the needs of the patient and on the capacity of the caregiver(s) to provide necessary services and support. The principal goal is for residents to achieve social reintegration. The team's success is based on its ability to recognize and promote autonomy for all residents.

The residential resource may be a family-type resource (also referred to as adult foster homes) or an intermediate resource such as group homes, former pavilions, supervised apartments, and boarding houses. All residents of these homes are followed by a interdisciplinary team, including resource workers, social workers, nurses, psychiatrists, and a special educator.

Please note: people are referred through Douglas Institute Services.
