An exciting research project is being launched, involving the use of the Care and Service Coordination Model by the CPC2 and Burgess 1 interdisciplinary teams.
This is a joint initiative by our Nursing Directorate, Adult Psychiatry Division and external partners.
The Care and Service Coordination Model is a highly-structured tool, designed to help staff plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate services. It is based on the theory that certain mental illnesses take predictable paths, and that teams that understand these paths can use their resources more efficiently.

Supporters of the Care and Service Coordination Model applaud its ability to:

  • maximize the talents of interdisciplinary teams;
  • manage cases efficiently from admission to discharge, and track cases that do not respond adequately to planned care and services;
  • help staff analyze and solve problems quickly.

The CPC2 and Burgess 1 teams will use this model for an assessment period of approximately two years, with guidance from Douglas clinician advisors in specialized care Mélanie Bourgoin and Yves-Marc Lemieux.

Research Data Essential
Once the CPC2 and Burgess 1 teams have employed this model for several months, the research component of the project will begin. Feedback from the CPC2 and Burgess 1 units will be studied, together with data from similar units at Hôpital Louis H. Lafontaine and Centre hospitalier Robert-Giffard.
Although the Care and Service Coordination Model has been used by the other two hospitals for several years, its effectiveness has never been systematically evaluated.
Douglas researchers Michel Perreault, PhD, and Marie Josée Fleury, PhD, will be part of the research team, led by principal investigator Nicole Ricard, PhD, a teacher at the Université de Montréal and researcher at the Centre de recherche Fernand-Seguin.
If research findings from this FRSQ-funded study conclude that the Care and Service Coordination Model is a “best practices” approach to assessing and providing treatment, it may eventually be adopted by other teams within our Hospital.
