In its May 4 issue, Le Devoir published two articles on the importance of the relationship between research and treatment at the Douglas Institute in a special “Mental Health” section.

Research informs clinical practice which informs research

In the first article, entitled “L’avenir de la santé mentale, c’est la prévention,” Lynne McVey talks about the concept of translational research at the Douglas, or the two-way communication that takes place between research and patient care.

“Patients who suffer from eating disorders are invited to participate in the Institute's research programs, and their treatment is constantly adjusted based on the latest advances.”

Fighting suicide

In the second article, Gustavo Turecki and Naguib Mechawar talk about their work to integrate research into clinical services.

“Some patients receive more accurate diagnoses thanks to the scanners at the Douglas Institute's Brain Imaging Centre. Based on the precise measurements of this technology, researchers can better predict the evolution of an illness and adjust treatment accordingly.”

Indeed, the theme for the World Congress on Suicide is “From research to practice.” Under the direction of Gustavo Turecki, the congress will begin on June 10.
