To celebrate its fifth year of offering movie nights on mental health issues, the Douglas will launch its 2008 Frames of Mind series at the National Film Board’s CineRobotheque in downtown Montréal. The event will be held May 5 and will feature Lyne Charlebois’ film Borderline. Following the screening, the author and film co-writer Marie-Sissi Labrèche, together with Douglas expert Mimi Israël, MD, will discuss the film and its related issues with the audience. This event takes place as the Mental Health Week 2008 unfolds from May 5 to May 11.

Claude Deschênes, journalist for the “Téléjournal” at Radio-Canada, will host the event and act as moderator for the discussion.

“The Douglas’ Frames of Mind movie series showcases up close and personal perspectives on living with mental illnesses” says Mimi Israël, MD, FRCPC, Douglas’ psychiatrist-in-chief. “The series provides a perfect opportunity to increase public knowledge and discuss mental health in a non-judgemental environment.”

Borderline is based on Labrèche’s autofictional novels Borderline and La Brèche. It chronicles the story of Kiki, an individual with borderline personality disorder, during her journey from self-destruction to self-love. Turning 30, she deals with the legacy of having an institutionalized mother and a “rough around the edges”, but affectionate, grandmother. The film stars Isabelle Blais, Angèle Coutu and Sylvie Drapeau, and also features French actor Jean-Hugues Anglade.
